Electromagnetic compatibility of small electric drives

New book: How users and developers can set up their end device with a regulated miniature drive to conform to EMC requirements

Today, small electric drives are a necessary basic feature of technical devices in many areas of application. From robotic vacuum cleaners and motorized heating valves to milk frothers - people are supported by battery-powered devices with built-in electric motors in all areas of life. Small electric drives are somewhat less visible, but no less important in everyday use, for example in optical devices, laboratory automation and special machine construction.

The challenge for electronics developers is to keep an eye on the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of the power electronics, μController and sensor technology components that come together in a very small space in the controlled electric drive and to find marketable compromises.

The book first provides a basic overview of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and the current framework conditions for the market launch of small electric drives. In the next step, the effects, coupling paths and test methods for both the interference emission of the energy conversion and the interference immunity of the sensor technology are presented. The sources of the various disturbance variables emanating from a motor controller are named and assigned to the effects. On this basis, the measures commonly used in EMC are then discussed step by step and their effectiveness is verified using the measurement results.

The book is aimed at users who are supported in designing their end device to be EMC-compliant with a regulated miniature drive as a component. In addition, electronics developers will learn the basic measures required to take EMC into account when developing motor controllers for small drives. If this is taken into account, such development projects can be successfully implemented with EMC safety.

From the contents:

- The challenge of EMC: Sources of interference in electric drives, frequency components, radio interference suppression for EMC

- CE certification: EU directives for the operation of small electric drives and relevant standards

- Interference emission from devices: conducted interference, coupling paths for electromagnetic interference, measurement methods and typical measurement results

- Interference signals in controlled drives: Interference behavior of a DC-DC converter, interference behavior of a motor controller

- Limitation of interference emission: Propagation paths, earthing and shielding, cable routing, filters and measurement results

- Immunity of devices: Acceptance criteria, effects, measures

- EMC measures for small drives: Integrated motor controllers, externally installed motor controllers, encoders

- Additional measures to increase robustness: coding, complementary signals (line driver), robustness of different interfaces
