Würzburg, July 6, 2007
On July 5, 2007, Karl Theodor Vogel, senior publisher of the Vogel Medien Group in Würzburg, died at the age of 92.
From very small beginnings after the Second World War, expulsion and expropriation in Thuringia, Karl Theodor Vogel, grandson of the founder of the publishing house C. G. Vogel, was involved in the reconstruction of the publishing and printing house as a partner and representative of the VOGEL family business. He was committed to the continuous improvement of specialist media, above all by bringing in international impulses from overseas and Europe, as well as through progressive dialog at association level.
For 23 years, Karl Theodor Vogel was a member of the board of the then trade magazine section of the Association of German Magazine Publishers. He was also an honorary member of the International Federation of the Periodical Press (FIPP) and the German Press Council.
His heart beat for the safeguarding of highly qualified technical journalism. On his seventieth birthday, in line with this basic publishing attitude, he set up a foundation dedicated to promoting the quality of technical journalism and awarded the Karl Theodor Vogel Prize every year for special achievements in this field. Today, the prize is known as the "Karl Theodor Vogel Prize of the German Trade Press: Trade Journalist of the Year".
His life's work as a publisher was highly recognized by experts when he was awarded the Jakob Fugger Medal in 1995. The publisher Karl Theodor Vogel followed the motto: "Stand at the top to serve - not to rule." His leadership claim was: "Make employees successful." In almost seventy years of publishing, the entrepreneur set standards for subsequent generations.
Dr. Kurt Eckernkamp, publisher, shareholder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Vogel Medien Group: "Karl Theodor Vogel was a passionate publisher. He lives on in our grateful memory and remains a role model and inspiration. His legacy is care."
