The Osnabrück-based supplier Karmann will be building roof modules for an open-top version of the Infiniti G37 at the Nissan plant in Tochigi/Japan from next year, according to industry sources. Karmann has also been successful with European manufacturers. For example, production of roof modules for the upcoming BMW 1 Series Convertible will also begin in Poland next year.
Production of the Infiniti G37 Cabriolet is scheduled to start at the end of 2008. The roof will be manufactured by Karmann as part of a "plant-in-plant" solution directly at the Nissan plant and installed there. The coupé and convertible are also to be successively introduced in Europe when Infiniti launches here next year as a luxury offshoot of Nissan.
The Infiniti G37 Cabriolet is the brand's second convertible. As early as 1991/92, there was a convertible version of the Infiniti M30 produced in small numbers and offered exclusively in the USA. It was developed and converted by the supplier ASC.
Karmann wants to shift its focus from vehicle construction to roof systems and establish a broad international base. The Infiniti project is an important milestone in this process. Karmann boss Peter Harbig confirmed to "Automobil Industrie" that a project in Japan will be launched in 2008, but did not wish to make any further comment.
