In an exclusive interview with the major industry magazine MM Maschinenmarkt, Dr. Thomas Lindner, Chairman of the VDMA (German Engineering Federation) Baden-Württemberg, complains that further training during short-time working still encounters numerous obstacles in day-to-day operations. This means that important opportunities for qualification are being lost.
According to Lindner, companies started organizing further training relatively late because they were initially busy organizing short-time work. The Chairman criticized the fact that companies often scheduled work-free days on Fridays and Mondays instead of creating contiguous periods for training. In addition, seminar providers lacked the capacity to meet the rapidly growing demand. There were often false expectations among employees: "Employees should not use short-time working to storm the DIY stores, but to invest in their professional future," Lindner demands.
Lindner does not believe that the argument that companies are now upskilling employees who they would have to let go at the end of the year is conclusive: "Further training is not only beneficial for the company, but also for the employee," he argues.
