The two-wheeler market is in crisis, and fewer and fewer people in Germany are obtaining a two-wheeler license. One helpful approach could be to adapt the regulations for driving licenses to allow easier access. Other European countries have shown the way. The trade medium "bike und business" is the official association organ and has launched an industry initiative.
The result after eight days of voting on the trade portal kfz-betrieb.de is clear: around 1,550 participants voted in favour of the liberalization proposals:
- Light motorcycles and scooters up to 125 cc in category A1 are to be reintegrated into driving license category B for passenger cars.
- The minimum age for a moped driver's license and thus for driving mopeds, mopeds and mokicks up to 45 km/h should be lowered to 15 years.
The "bike und business" driving license initiative, which is also supported and promoted by the German two-wheeler mechanics trade and industry, is to continue until the end of April. All parents, schoolchildren, employers, club members, motorcyclists, moped, scooter, moped and bicycle riders can cast their vote on kfz-betrieb.de. An amendment to the European Driving License Directive this year gives the Federal Minister of Transport the opportunity to create a new approach to two-wheeler driving licenses and thus provide an impetus for more fun with two-wheeled mobility.
"Germany needs more two-wheeled mobility again," says Stephan Maderner, Editor-in-Chief of "bike und business": "In 2009, around 100,000 fewer new motorcycles were registered than ten years ago. In addition, fewer and fewer German citizens are obtaining a two-wheeler driver's license. The number of new A and A1 licenses issued each year fell by almost a third to 200,000 between 2002 and 2008. Young people shy away from the high cost of a motorcycle license. Germany has long since lost its position as a model market for two-wheelers".
