According to the Würzburg-based trade magazine "kfz-betrieb", around 90 percent of specialist tire stores as well as many car dealerships and independent garages have tire insurance in their portfolio. However, consumers often do not take advantage of this offer, even though it protects them from financial burdens in the event of a flat tire.
Standard tire insurance policies cover damage caused by objects driving into the tire, by hitting the tire, e.g. on the kerb, and by vandalism or theft. According to "kfz-betrieb", the costs for this insurance cover are low. They amount to ten to 30 euros for an insurance term of two years.
Taking out tire insurance can therefore be well worthwhile, as punctures are not as rare as consumers generally believe: tire damage has been in second place in the ADAC breakdown statistics since 2006, reports "kfz-betrieb". However, there are differences in compensation: most tire insurance companies work with discounts that depend on the remaining tire tread. Only the insurance group "The Warranty Group" currently waives discounts.
