BMW is getting serious about electric cars. The Megacity Vehicle (MCV) should be on the market as early as 2013. "The MCV will set a new benchmark," according to BMW boss Norbert Reithofer. In its latest issue, the trade journal "Automobil Industrie" describes in detail how the electric car with its lightweight construction and Life Drive concept, CFRP passenger cell, hybrid synchronous electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack is set to win the hearts of the urban population.
The BMW "Number One" strategy is bearing its first fruits. From 2013, the Megacity Vehicle, MCV for short, is to be launched as the first product of BMW's "project i" initiative under a sub-brand: A four-seater, purely battery-powered small car with a rear engine, rear-wheel drive and a passenger cell made of carbon fibers. According to BMW, this combines consistent lightweight construction, optimum space functionality and maximum crash safety. At the same time, the compact electric drivetrain enables new interior concepts with previously unknown functions and degrees of freedom in design.
The July/August issue of "Automobil Industrie", which will be published on August 6, 2010, will go into more detail about MCV. You can order a free sample copy from: gunther.schunk@vogel.de.
