According to the results of the German MARIE study, around 30 percent of all breast cancers in the postmenopause could be avoided by avoiding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and increasing physical activity, Medizin Report reports in its current issue.
In women with receptor-positive breast cancer, as many as 38 percent of cases were attributed to HRT and lack of exercise - factors that could not be influenced, such as family history or the time of the first and last menstrual period, were of similar importance. In the case-control study funded by German Cancer Aid, data from more than 3,000 patients who developed breast cancer after the onset of menopause were compared with those of over 6,000 control subjects. Around 19 percent of cases of invasive breast cancer were attributed to the use of hormone preparations and 13 percent to lack of exercise. Alcohol consumption and obesity had a much smaller influence.
