According to a New Zealand study, persistent sleep deprivation could promote obesity in children. This is reported in the current issue of "Medizin Report"[here].
The study involved 244 children whose data was collected from the age of three to seven. Regardless of initial weight and other influencing factors, sleep duration between the ages of three and five correlated with body mass index (BMI) in the seventh year of life. Each additional hour of sleep during these years was associated with a reduction in BMI of 0.48 and a reduction in the risk of obesity of around 60%, the authors report.
According to their data, the weight gain in both girls and boys was the result of increased fat deposition rather than an accumulation of free fat mass.
