The topic of eGovernment is now firmly established in administrations. Ten years ago, however, it was still uncharted territory when the first issue of eGovernment Computing, the newspaper for IT-supported local and state administration, was published by Vogel IT-Medien Augsburg in November 2001.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder had issued the slogan "The data should run, not the citizens" - just as the eBusiness bubble was bursting. In May 2001, he welcomed 200 heads of public authorities to the first conference of the "BundOnline 2005" initiative. eGovernment was launched shortly afterwards with the introduction of the German Digital Signature Act and Chancellor Schröder declared at the time: "In a few years' time, hardly anyone will understand if you can't apply for an ID card or driving license online."
The editorial team had set itself ambitious goals: The specialist medium informs IT and eGovernment decision-makers at federal, state and local level and in public institutions about all technically relevant areas of digital information processing in the public sector. The publication provides a reliable and complete overview of current technologies, initiatives, trends and specifications that are relevant for the investment area of this target group, including IT procurement in the public sector.
Dr. Herbert O. Zinell, Chairman of the IT Planning Council: "In the difficult-to-understand topic of eGovernment and Open Government, it is important to win over many supporters, explain the respective services to citizens and companies and courageously implement promising innovative concepts. eGovernment Computing has been masterfully dedicated to this important task for ten years now." "This is precisely the path we will continue to take into the future," assure Managing Director Werner Nieberle and the two editorial directors Manfred Klein and Gerald Viola, the founding fathers of eGovernment Computing.
