Bright prospects. In the shadow of China, Brazil has more than doubled its vehicle sales in the past ten years. Forecasts predict that Brazil will be the third largest passenger car market behind China and the USA by 2015.
Following the success figures of recent years, car manufacturers and their suppliers are placing the South American country even further at the forefront of their global strategies. So is Brazil the new "car paradise", asks "Automobil Industrie" magazine Cledorvino Belini, Chairman of the Brazilian car manufacturers' association Anfavea. And how do you deal with the fact that, according to a recent study by Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Brazilian vehicles are 60% more expensive than imported products?
Belini is confident about future developments, especially as the government is tackling the problems with global competitiveness through regulatory measures. Importantly, "companies are also meeting the requirements by investing in the country".
Indeed, international manufacturers are investing record amounts in new equipment and models. The members of Anfavea, according to Belini, have announced investments of 22 billion dollars; "our goal is to position the automotive industry among the most important manufacturers and exporters at a global level".
