According to the Association of German Foundations, there were 18,964 foundations in Germany at the turn of the year - and the trend is rising. Foundations are an important pillar of the solidarity-based community in Germany: Charitable foundations alone distribute around 17 billion euros every year for projects and recipients in the areas of social welfare, education and training, art and culture or environmental protection. But how do you set up a foundation with legal capacity? What tax aspects need to be taken into account? What needs to be considered in connection with charitable status?
Anyone involved in the foundation sector must be familiar with the most frequently asked questions. For this reason, the "Stiftungsbrief" of the IWW Institut für Wirtschaftspublizistik has published a special edition entitled "Zentrale Fragen zu Stiftungen: 60 Fragen/60 Antworten", covering the following topics, among others:
- Types of foundations and their establishment: How do you set up a foundation?
- Requirements for tax-privileged foundations: What does the tax office look out for?
- Offsetting losses in business operations: Which
offsetting options are permissible?
- Tax aspects of setting up and operating a foundation: What tax
effects arise for the donor?
- Recognition and risks of non-profit status: When is a foundation's
non-profit status revoked?
- Termination and conversion of foundations: Under what conditions can
a foundation with legal capacity be converted?
