Whether in the mining, power plant or port sector, new projects around the world can only be realized subject to strict environmental regulations. The approval of the "Environmental Impact Assessment" by the authorities therefore represents an important milestone for these projects. In many industrial processes, the transportation, storage and mechanical processing of bulk materials are among the core processes. They have a considerable influence on the environmental compatibility and also on the economic efficiency of the projects, especially in the extraction of raw materials (e.g. coal, ores, etc.) or in bulk goods ports.
How energy efficiency can be increased in the handling of bulk solids and how increasing environmental protection requirements can be met was the main topic of this year's "BulkSolids Europe 2012" conference on October 11 and 12 in Berlin. More than 140 bulk solids experts from 29 countries took part in this year's event, which was organized by the specialist medium "Bulk Solids Handling". Under the motto "On the Road to Efficiency - Today's Best Practice and Future Potentials to meet Energy and Environmental Requirements", they learned about the latest technological developments and used the platform to exchange experiences between operators, plant constructors, engineers, consultants and scientists. At the two-day conference, the latest plant concepts and machines were presented in lectures and an accompanying trade exhibition. Under the direction of Prof. Gabriel Lodeweijks from TU Delft, one of the main topics of the conference was the European raw materials sector and the increasing demand for biomass and the resulting logistical requirements.
The simulation of bulk solids processes was another important topic: By predicting the behavior of bulk solids in plants and processes, costs can be reduced and design errors can be avoided in advance. BulkSolids Europe 2012 in Berlin was the 4th event in this series after Barcelona, Prague and Glasgow and takes place every two years.
