The new Golf VII is just a few weeks old. For the logistics and process managers at Volkswagen, however, the car is much older: they have already been working on the logistics surrounding the production of the compact car for several months. For VW, the Golf is one of the most important products - not only from a sales perspective, but also technologically and logistically. Background: With the new generation of the compact car, the car manufacturer is pushing the production concept of the modular transverse matrix (MQB).
With this method, every assembly, e.g. rear end, drive train or engine, can be combined with every other assembly of the MQB, following the Lego principle. Volkswagen's aim is to produce a wide range of niche vehicles for the market by combining all assemblies in the transverse toolkit, with comparatively low development costs and a fast time-to-market.
The new MQB fundamentally changes many processes and, according to industry experts, ensures greater efficiency and a reduction in the variety of components and materials. The editorial team of the trade journal MM Logistik investigated the extent to which car manufacturers Volkswagen and Audi are using the new production concept to their advantage.
