The chemical industry, with its energy-intensive electrolysis plants, is one of the largest consumers of electricity in Germany. However, it is precisely these plants that could now offer a solution to the electricity storage debate: If used correctly, modern, highly flexible membrane electrolysis plants could also serve as electricity storage systems in the future and contribute to grid stability in Germany.
The PVC manufacturer Vestolit in Marl operates such a modern chemical plant and is promoting more flexible energy use and a market that rewards this flexibility and treats consumers in the same way as producers. This includes power plants, storage facilities and demand-side management, from which energy-intensive industries can benefit.
The current issue of PROCESS takes a comprehensive look at this approach and the impact of the energy transition on the process industry. It also presents the results of a PROCESS roundtable on the topic of energy excellence: At this expert forum at the end of last year, users, electricity producers and suppliers discussed with PROCESS editors what savings potential the industry can still leverage.
