According to the majority of experts from the automotive industry, fully automated driving is here to stay. When the time comes, drivers will have a lot of free time in which they can read, listen to music or work, for example. Autonomous driving should be possible in certain scenarios as early as 2020. But how will we get there? How will vehicles, their value chain and the associated business models change? To discuss this, the trade journal Automobil Industrie invited five renowned experts to a round table discussion, the results of which are presented in the current issue.
The experts from Continental, Daimler, IBM, mm1 Consulting & Management and TRW agree that many people would like to use their driving time for other purposes and that the advancement of autonomous driving is therefore of great interest: "In principle, autonomous driving frees up time," says Volker Scholz, Managing Partner of mm1 Consulting & Management. Fully automated driving is an attractive innovation for young people in particular, comments Gerhard Baum, Vice President Automotive, IBM: "It's about comfort, productivity and personalization, so that the car once again becomes a top product that optimally meets their needs, especially for the younger generation."
