The winners of the third Devicemed Award at Compamed have been announced: the winner in the Materials and Semi-Finished Products category was Composites Busch, which developed a metallic hand milling machine for hip operations together with its customer MPS Precimed. Its main body is made of carbon fiber composites. The instrument is 40 percent lighter than the previous model and consists of half the components.
In the contract manufacturing category, Cicor Technologies Ltd. received the trophy as outsourcing partner for the Valedo therapeutic back training device from Hocoma AG. The device uses Bluetooth sensors developed by Cicor to record and transmit the movements of the trunk into a virtual game world, giving patients real-time feedback on whether the exercise has been performed correctly. The sensors contain a 3D gyroscope, a 3D accelerometer and a 3D magnetometer and can therefore detect movements of a full 360 degrees.
The disposable flow sensor from Sensirion was ultimately chosen as the best product among the many entries in the OEM components category. The jury was particularly impressed by the integration of the thermal sensor element in a microchip, which fits on the surface of a pinhead thanks to CMO sensor technology from semiconductor technology. The manufacturing costs of the flow sensors therefore allow applications in disposable infusion sets, which significantly increases the reliability of drug delivery.
New this year was the Medical Devices and Accessories award category. Here, the award was presented to the company Raumedic with the product Rau-Safe. The active needle safety system for syringes is intuitive for users to handle and uses tactile and acoustic feedback to signal that the needle is securely enclosed. The non-slip handle of the 2-component injection-molded part consists of a soft component. Rau-Safe can be adapted to syringes already on the market and is so compact that it is often possible to retain the standard packaging of syringes.
Inspired by the exhibitors who did not take part in the award, an ad hoc award was also presented for the first time this year: Devicemed editor-in-chief Peter Reinhardt presented this for the bio-plotter from Envision Tec, which particularly caught his eye during his tour of the trade fair. From bone and cartilage to skin and cells, individual implants can be produced quickly and cost-effectively.
