To mark the 125th anniversary of Vogel Business Media, the Vogel photo group is offering the opportunity to learn more about the topic of "Photos in media". On Monday, 11.04.2016, at 19:00, Prof. Dr. Alexander Godulla, Professor of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt, will give a lecture on the topic at the Vogel Convention Center (VCC) in Würzburg:
Behind the scenes of World Press Photo.
What makes pictures press photos of the year.
For this lecture, we invited a speaker who is not a photographer, but a media scientist who deals with the impact and use of photographs. Prof. Godulla completed his doctorate in this field and was able to gain deep insights into the work of the international jury at World Press Photo in his longitudinal analysis over a period of 50 years.
This jury has been selecting the Press Photo of the Year in the Netherlands since 1955. Since then, the award has gained enormous prestige, but also harsh criticism. While supporters often equate the title "Press Photo of the Year" with an award for photography and praise the visual power of the photos, opponents criticize an allegedly exaggerated depiction of violence and misery. The lecture shows how the juries search for the one winning image between the two extremes every year - and why the award has perhaps become more important than ever despite all the discussions.
The annual "World Press Photo" exhibition, which can be seen in Kitzingen until April 10, 2016, allows visitors to engage with photos in a journalistic context.
