The predecessor version of the current Opel Astra was launched in 2009 as an estate version. After years of financial crisis and image problems at General Motors, the trade press was positively surprised by the Astra J, which the editors of "Gebrauchtwagen Praxis" can also confirm.
The estate impressed the trade critics with several features: The basic chassis is equipped with a Watt-Link rear axle and the optionally available Flex-Ride suspension with adjustable dampers is rated as particularly good. Another positive innovation in this vehicle class is the front camera with traffic sign recognition and lane departure warning. The electric parking brake is also perceived as luxurious in this vehicle class. The editors are pleased with the finish, material appearance and workmanship.
After evaluating the main inspections, the testing organizations also confirmed the Opel's good ratings. The only criticisms were rust on the exhaust system, problems with the brakes and leaks in the engine and drivetrain.
The Astra scored full marks in the Euro NCAP crash test. The good result there is also associated with the relatively high weight of more than 1,600 kg. The ADAC also attests to the Astra J's good quality: the breakdown frequency has decreased significantly compared to its predecessor. A look at the recalls reveals no major weaknesses apart from isolated software problems.
