Car brands: renaissance in city centers?

"kfz-betrieb" analyzes inner-city strategies and plans of car manufacturers - with tops and flops of major cities

Car brands are still lacking in places where people spend their leisure time and a lot of money. Many a manufacturer or dealer is therefore focusing on the "city center shop window". It is not only cities like Munich, Berlin or Hamburg that have a high visitor frequency in the city center. The pedestrian zones of many other major German cities are also bustling with activity. But while all the major brand labels present themselves in the city centers, the car manufacturers' brands are usually conspicuous by their absence.

The Nuremberg-based GfK market researchers have therefore evaluated the top 5 and flop 5 cities with over 100,000 inhabitants in terms of "automotive purchasing power" and "retail sales" for the trade journal "kfz-betrieb". Whether you are a car manufacturer or a dealer, anyone thinking about a city center presence should consider much more than the number of inhabitants in their analysis. Both the tops and the flops reveal a sometimes surprising picture of cities. Würzburg, for example, performs better than Berlin in both segments.

"On the one hand, our industry is complaining that nobody comes into the showroom anymore because people are only traveling digitally. On the other hand, our industry doesn't go where people are still traveling in real life," says "kfz-betrieb" editor-in-chief Wolfgang Michel: "So if people aren't coming to the dealership, then perhaps the car store should go where people are. They are always on the move in attractive city centers."

In the current issue, "kfz-betrieb" presents the inner-city strategies and plans of car manufacturers, presents an inner-city car dealership that is no longer allowed to sell new cars, and weighs up the opportunities and risks of an automotive brand presence in the city.
