It is a paradox: the automotive industry has so far been quite successful in its efforts to reduce fuel consumption and thus the CO2 emissions of its products. Since 2008, the average value of the German new car fleet has fallen from 170 to 127 grams per kilometer. But this trend has been broken. In the first six months, the fleet value rose again for the first time in years, albeit only slightly by 0.6 grams. Against this backdrop, it is likely to be difficult for the industry to achieve the next stage of CO2 legislation.
As if that were not enough, the car industry must expect the limits to be tightened further. Although the specifications are currently being written for the models that will be released after 2020, it is not yet clear what limits they will have to comply with from 2025. Figures of 68 or 78 g/km are circulating in the public domain. This is so low that it can no longer be achieved with conventional vehicle and engine concepts. And, to be fair, neither can electric cars.
The current issue of "kfz-betrieb" from August 4, 2017 reports on the failure of the EU target to reduce CO2 emissions in road traffic. The trade journal also highlights possible alternatives that could easily achieve the CO2 target.
