"I congratulate the HIRI on its first birthday and hope that young, excellent junior researchers will enrich the HIRI and that their groundbreaking research results will benefit humanity!" said Dr. Eckernkamp, who was unable to attend the event.
"It's great that committed citizens of our city, such as the Eckernkamp family, are directly supporting young scientists at our institute. I am already very familiar with this kind of philanthropy from the USA and am delighted that this kind of personal support and thus personal connection is also possible here," said a delighted Prof. Dr. Jörg Vogel. "For us, it is a matter of course that the scholarship holders regularly report to our donors on the progress of their research projects in a way that everyone can understand."
"The establishment of non-university research facilities is of central importance both for the university and for the entire region. These high-performance centers are a decisive factor in attracting and retaining the world's best scientists and for the transfer of knowledge to companies and institutions," emphasized University President Prof. Dr. Alfred Forchel: "Funding from foundations, which support promising new approaches at a very early stage as well as young scientists, also plays a very important role here. My heartfelt thanks go to the Vogel Foundation for this!"
The aim of the fellowship program is to support excellent young researchers from the natural and life sciences. In this way, the Vogel Foundation would like to enable outstanding young scientists in particular to undertake training and further education as part of a doctorate at the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research in Würzburg. In principle, highly qualified university graduates who are carrying out their doctoral project at the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research in Würzburg are eligible for funding.
A fellowship program runs for a period of 36 months and is endowed with 25,000 euros annually. The first fellow will be selected and start shortly.
The Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research was founded in May 2017 as a joint institution by the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU). HIRI is the world's first research institution to combine the fields of RNA biology and infection research.
