The new German government wants to promote a sustainable orientation of the German economy. This is clear from the coalition agreement that was finally signed yesterday. "For us, the promotion of sustainable development is the fundamental goal and benchmark of government action," the agreement states. Specifically, the circular economy is to be promoted and recycling rates increased. The digitalization of traditional industry - keyword Industry 4.0 - is to be driven forward and expanded to include intelligent services ("smart services") and green IT. The coalition partners want to improve working conditions in the supply chains of German companies and strengthen consumer rights. The government partners want to respond to the public debate on factory farming with an animal welfare initiative and subsidies and IT procurement are to be made sustainable.
The government program reflects a change in society's expectations of companies and not only entails new obligations, according to CSR MAGAZINE Managing Director Achim Halfmann: "By operating in a sustainable and future-oriented manner today, companies have the opportunity to position themselves as pioneers in their markets and help shape the framework conditions."
