Changing tires: More effort due to tire pressure monitoring system

Low-cost providers often do not include work on the TPMS in the price of the tire service

The first snowflakes have already fallen in parts of Germany. Now is the time to upgrade your car to winter tires. Owners of vehicles registered for the first time after November 1, 2014 must take into account that their cars have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) as standard.

This safety system requires more servicing when changing tires - especially if it is a direct-measuring TPMS with sensors in the tires. Consumers should be prepared for the fact that changing a wheel or fitting a new tire will cost more than is the case for vehicles without TPMS. The workshop employee must first check whether a direct measuring system has been installed during the service acceptance. To do this, he uses a special readout device that communicates with the sensors in all four tires. A check of the TPMS signal light is also on the program. Finally, he records the status of the system in writing.

If a new tire has to be fitted, there is an additional cost factor: the so-called service kit of the tire sensor must be replaced every time the tire is changed. These are the parts that are subject to particular ageing and corrosion influences, such as seals or valve cores.

"When consumers compare the prices for wheel and tire changes at different garages, they should check whether the TPMS service is included in the offers," recommends "kfz-betrieb" editor Jan Rosenow: "Many a cheap provider could otherwise turn out to be an expensive solution later on."
