As beneficial as regular alcohol consumption may be for the blood vessels, it is just as bad for the risk of cancer. According to current estimates based on data from the large EPIC study of almost 364,000 people in Europe, alcohol consumption is the cause of around one in 10 cases of cancer in men and one in 33 cases of cancer in women. This is reported in the current issue of Medizin Report.
The majority of alcohol-related cancer cases are attributed to excessive alcohol consumption (more than two drinks a day for men, more than one for women). According to the researchers, 25% (women) and 44% (men) of tumors in the upper respiratory tract are due to alcohol consumption, 18% and 33% of liver tumors, 4% of intestinal tumors and 5% of female breast tumors. The
pancreatic cancer risk is significantly increased by 36% with more than three drinks a day, according to data from another US study with more than one million participants.
